A Week In Morocco

If you are looking for a post about an amazing holiday in which I learned to live with the locals and trekked across the country for a week with only a rucksack then you have definitely come to the wrong place. If I go on holiday I tend to spend my time on a sun lounger or in a pool reading a good book and sipping a mocktail. But I thought I would right a blog post about my holiday in Morocco anyway because it was still so much fun.

In The Hotel
The hotel I went to was called the Riu Tikida Dunas and it was part of a chain of 3 hotels in the area. It was positioned on the coast of Agadir and was not about living with the locals. This was an all inclusive tourist destination with a spa, gym, 5 pools and A LOT of bars.

If you ever visit Morocco for whatever reason, I advise you to go to a Moroccan Hammam which is a traditional relaxational process. First you sit in a steam room, you get exfoliated all over, a mud mask is applied, you are wrapped in plastic, the mud mask is washed off and finally a massage with the Moroccan argan oil. The whole experience was very relaxing and serene, it left my skin so soft.

The food was a buffet and filled with Brits piling their plates with chips, burgers and pizzas. However, they did have a Moroccan section and a Moroccan restaurant. The olives were local and absolutely delicious and the Moroccan dish of vegetable or chicken Tajine was especially tasty. I would love to tell you I tried some amazingly unusual dish that shocked me massively but I'm not a massively adventurous eater so I can not.

The staff were extremely friendly and I loved the salt water pool for swimming in as it was a bit more buoyant and less harmful. The hotel had something called a 'Cat Cafe' which was basically just giving kittens and cats food and a home. They vaccinated and raised them as pets. They were all ADORABLE and I swear one of them was my cat Wiggie's long lost brother because they looked so much alike!

Bus Tour
The only form of exploring we did was a coach trip around Agadir to see some of the culture.

We visited a little museum about the Berber culture, the Marina, the Kasbah ( an ancient wall up in the atlas mountains), a mosque and the Souk market.

Agadir used to all be up in the mountains but in at 23:40 29th February 1960 there was an earthquake that killed between 12,000 - 15,000 people, injured 12,000 and left at least 35,000 people homeless. It forced the remaining out of the mountains. The Kasbah is located around the ruins and it is extremely shocking to see.

The Souk is FULL of markets with everything from spices to toilet roll to electronics. The locals will  come here instead of a supermarket to get their everyday essentials and as I was there right before the Muslim celebration of Eid al-Adha , it was packed full of people.

This was most probably not the most interesting travel update but it was the truth and just updating you about my holiday.

Comment what your favourite holiday ever has been - I would love to hear all about it!

Goodbye,
Ellie x
